During the first storm, the boys enjoyed watching the snow fall. At times, it snowed at a rate of an inch or more an hour! Gavin was obviously pleased that he, too, was able to enjoy the view. He was able to stand by himself by holding on to Ryan's windowsill. It was short-lived, but a reminder that he's growing up quickly and will be mobile in no time!
Once the snow started to taper off, Ryan and Daddy decided to shovel the deck. By that point, we had received more than 2 feet of snow and we worried that our deck would collapse. Since it was a heavy, wet snow, shoveling was back-breaking work so Daddy opted for the snowblower instead. Although they eventually cleared most of the snow off the deck, Guinness still wanted no part of risking life and limb going down the steps to do his business in the backyard. So, for the next few days he relieved himself on the deck. I was disgusted by this at first, but quickly realized it was better than him having accidents in the house (which was the case during the second storm!).
After a brief reprieve of cookies and hot chocolate by the fireplace, Ryan, Daddy, and Mommy decided to play fox and rabbit in the frontyard/driveway (with all that snow, it was hard to distinguish where the yard stopped and the driveway started). Daddy stomped and shoveled an intricate maze of paths and "safe" zones for us to use during the game. Then, Ryan pretended to be a goose (despite the name of the game, he preferred being a goose to a rabbit) and Mommy or Daddy pretended to be a fox and chased him down the paths. Once he grew bored with that, Daddy began shoveling/snowblowing the driveway as Ryan and Mommy tried to make a snowman. It was a pitiful attempt at a snowman. And, mid-way through, Gavin woke up so I had to abandon my efforts to tend to him. Daddy decided to finish it for me by molding a head for the snowman using a bucket. It looked so awful, I couldn't bring myself to take pictures of it. I just kept my fingers crossed that the next storm would dump enough snow to cover it up so the neighbors or passing motorists couldn't see it.
Below are some photos of the first snowstorm on February 6. As you can see, the snow was just shy of waist-high on Ryan, and knee-height on Mommy. And, if you look closely at the picture of Mike's cruiser, you can just barely make out the top of Guinness' head in front of the license plate.
The First 28 Inches...
Plus 26 Inches More = 50+ Inches In Less Than A Week!
Below are some photos of the second major snowstorm to hit the area on February 9-10th. Because of the high winds which caused snow drifts, it's difficult to determine how much snow we received the second time around. Again, local meteorologists estimate we received 26 inches, although we did have snow drifts that topped our 4 foot fence. Ryan posed for pictures with Mommy and Daddy in front of the house, where the snow drifts appeared to be the deepest. In places, the snow was thigh-high on Mike and over Ryan's head! Apparently four feet of snow is too much because Ryan had little interest in playing in it!
Once the roads were plowed, the sidewalks cleared, and our driveway shoveled, we did venture out to see the historic snowfall. Although all the major roads in the area are passable, it's amazing to see the walls of snow that line the highway. Some of the piles of snow are so tall, you can't see the businesses behind them when driving down the road!
And they say more is on the way on Monday! Perhaps next year, Mike and I should invest in some snowpants and boots! For now, we've had our fill of Winter and are anxiously awaiting Spring!
Don't you just love a good blizzard...or two...or more? Winter is snow much fun! Ryan looks like he is snowed under, and Gavin is such a jolly, happy soul. Michelle and Mike must have cold feet, but warm hearts being outside in that weather. So, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...somewhere else!
